On June 19, 1865, enslaved people throughout Texas finally received word that the Civil War had ended and that they were now free. Juneteenth marks this day of liberation and celebrates the emancipation of all enslaved African Americans. As we approach Juneteenth 2024, let us remember the struggle for freedom and equality that enslaved people faced and continue to fight against racism and discrimination today.
