Hannah Gutierrez-Reed Sentenced in Rust Shooting Trial
Former Armorer Faces 18 Months for Fatal Shooting

Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the former armorer on the film "Rust," was sentenced to 18 months in prison on Wednesday, June 21, 2024. Gutierrez-Reed was convicted of involuntary manslaughter earlier this year in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. The judge in the case questioned Gutierrez-Reed's "sense of responsibility" after previous firearms training sessions with actors.
Gutierrez-Reed's lawyers insisted that she conducted proper firearms training with the actors on set. However, prosecutors argued that Gutierrez-Reed ignored basic safety protocols and created a dangerous environment by failing to properly check the gun and the live ammunition before the fatal shooting.
The trial of Gutierrez-Reed was the first criminal case related to the Rust shooting. The case has cast a renewed spotlight on the importance of firearms safety on film sets and sparked a debate about the need for stricter regulations within the film industry.
